Jennifer Lopez Opens Up About Past Relationship Struggles in Emotional Documentary

Bollywoodfever, March 3: In her revealing Prime Video documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, Jennifer Lopez offers a candid look into the “unsavory” experiences she’s faced in past relationships.

The documentary accompanies her journey in creating the original musical film This Is Me… Now: A Love Story and her upcoming album.

Lopez touches on these experiences after filming a scene for her song “Rebound,” featured on the new album. The scene, which includes a choreographed dance with a love interest, depicts a toxic relationship and elements of domestic violence, prompting Lopez to reflect on her own past.

“I’m glad that one’s behind us,” Lopez says, visibly relieved after completing the scene.

The emotional toll of portraying such a storyline becomes evident when Lopez, during a car ride, discusses the challenges of shooting the scene. “Being thrown around and manhandled like that is not fun,” she admits. “I was never in a relationship where I got beat up, thank God, but I’ve definitely been manhandled and a couple of other unsavory things…rough…disrespectful.”

Working on the movie musical has been an emotionally draining experience for Lopez, who confides in her longtime friend and producing partner, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, about the vulnerability required for the role.

“More than anything, it’s really a vulnerable place to be in every day. That’s why I go to work every day, and I’m like, ‘What am I doing?'” Lopez shares.

“It’s a personal journey… that will relate to so many women who are abused,” Goldsmith-Thomas responds, highlighting the significance of the scenes Lopez found challenging. “You’re talking about how we accept less than we deserve.”

While Lopez does not name anyone specifically, she makes it clear that the film is a reflection of her cumulative experiences in love and her journey towards self-love.

“There were people in my life who said, ‘I loved you,’ and then didn’t do things that were kind of in line with the word love,” Lopez explains. “You have to hit rock bottom, where you’re in situations that are so uncomfortable and so painful that you finally go, ‘I don’t want this anymore.’ A therapist said to me, ‘What if this was your daughter? What would you do?’ And it was so clear. I was like, I’d tell her, ‘Get the f–k out of here, never look back.'”

The documentary and musical movie also explore Lopez’s path to finding true love with her husband, Ben Affleck, more than 20 years after their initial engagement was called off.

“I think I was angry at you for a long time. But that heartbreak set both of us on a course to figuring ourselves out to being better people. I think I’ve forgiven you all the way. I think I need to forgive myself [for] some things,” Lopez tells Affleck in a moment of reflection.

The Greatest Love Story Never Told, and This Is Me… Now: A Love Story are both streaming now on Prime Video, offering an intimate glimpse into Lopez’s personal and emotional journey.
