Dana White Takes Decisive Action: Igor Severino Released from UFC Following Disqualification for Biting Andre Lima
BollywoodFever, March 23: Igor Severino’s tenure in the UFC was abruptly cut short after a controversial incident during his debut fight at UFC Vegas 89 against Andre Lima.
The young flyweight was disqualified for biting Lima’s upper left arm during the second round while they were grappling, an action that immediately drew Lima’s protest and led to the fight’s stoppage by referee Chris Tognoni.

After inspecting the injury and consulting with officials, the fight was officially called off. UFC President Dana White later confirmed to Kevin Iole of keviniole.com that Severino would be released from the promotion, with potential further actions from the Nevada State Athletic Commission anticipated.
“Those were two up-and-coming undefeated fighters,” White said. “If you get frustrated and want out of the fight, there are plenty of ways to do it, but the worst thing u can do is bite your opponent. Now, you get cut and lose the biggest opportunity of your life. Not to mention, he’s going to have real problems with the NSAC.”
The ESPN commentary team was initially puzzled by the decision not to issue a warning to Severino before disqualifying him. However, the clarity of the bite mark on Lima’s arm quickly dispelled any doubts regarding the intention behind Severino’s actions.
This disqualification marked Severino’s first professional MMA loss following his successful entry into the UFC through “Dana White’s Contender Series.” Prior to this, Severino had built his career in Brazil, notably competing in the Jungle Fight Championship.
Before the incident, Severino had been performing well, outstriking Lima and achieving multiple takedowns. Meanwhile, the fight also marked Lima’s UFC debut, having earned his spot through a victory on DWCS in October. Despite the unusual circumstances, Lima celebrated his win enthusiastically.
“I was able to hit him really hard, but then he bit me when I was trying to take him down. I was going to continue to damage him, continue to touch him and finish the fight, but as you saw, that’s why I yelled. He bit me.”
Adding an unexpected twist to the ordeal, Lima’s manager disclosed to MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz that Dana White promised Lima the unique “I Got F***ing Bit Bonus,” turning the unusual disqualification into a somewhat fortuitous event for Lima.
