Indonesia’s Ruang volcano, located off the island of Sulawesi, erupted on Tuesday, emitting ash and lava. This comes after an earlier eruption this month prompted hundreds of evacuations and the closure of an airport.
The country’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the alert level to the highest following the morning eruption, advising residents to steer clear of the volcano, as per its website.
Ruang Island in North Sulawesi province is home to over 800 residents, most of whom were evacuated after the earlier eruption. The number of evacuees on Tuesday was not immediately clear.
The country’s disaster mitigation agency did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
Social media footage on Tuesday, whose authenticity Reuters could not immediately verify, showed lava streaming down the volcano, located approximately 100 km (62 miles) from the provincial capital, Manado.
Manado’s airport was temporarily shut down by transport authorities after the earlier eruption, during which falling rocks and ash damaged homes and necessitated the evacuation of a nearby hospital.
Last week, authorities downgraded the alert status to level 3 before elevating it back to level 4 on Tuesday.
Indonesia sits on the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” an area known for frequent seismic activity due to the convergence of multiple tectonic plates.
