Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has labeled domestic violence a “national crisis” following widespread protests across the nation this past weekend. The demonstrations, which saw thousands rallying in cities throughout Australia, were ignited by the alarming deaths of 27 women this year, attributed to gender-based violence in a country of 27 million people.

Speaking to the Nine Network on Monday, Albanese emphasized the urgent need for governmental action at all levels to address and prevent gender-based violence. “Quite clearly, we need to do more. It’s not enough to just have empathy,” he stated.

Highlighting the gravity of the issue, the Prime Minister remarked, “The fact that … a woman dies every four days on average at the hand of a partner is just a national crisis.”

The weekend witnessed 17 rallies across Australia, with Melbourne alone drawing an estimated 15,000 participants. In response to the public outcry, Albanese announced plans to convene a meeting with leaders from Australian states and territories this Wednesday to formulate a coordinated response.

The government’s presence at the rallies, particularly in Canberra, was met with vocal demands from protesters. Attendees at the capital’s rally confronted Albanese, Women’s Minister Katy Gallagher, and Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth, shouting, “we want action” and “do your job.”

During his address at the rally, Albanese acknowledged the need for a broader focus on the perpetrators and preventive measures against violence. “We need to change the culture, we need to change attitudes — we need to change the legal system,” he told the gathered crowd, reaffirming his commitment to tackling the crisis head-on.
