Lotte Kopecky clinches the Paris-Roubaix Femmes title in a dramatic sprint finish at the iconic Roubaix velodrome, overcoming top contenders in a close race. The world champion highlights her team’s support and the intense competition among the leading sprinters.
In an exhilarating race finish on Saturday, Lotte Kopecky claimed the Paris-Roubaix Femmes title, becoming the world champion in a competitive sprint. The Belgian racer, representing SD Worx-Protime, was part of a leading sextet as the 148.5km race approached its climax at the renowned Roubaix velodrome, where she showcased her remaining energy to outperform her competition.
Elisa Balsamo of Lidl-Trek secured the second spot, closely followed by Pfeiffer Georgi of DSM-Firmenich PostNL, who narrowly beat Marianne Vos of Team Visma-Lease a Bike for the third position. Vos initiated the final velodrome lap’s surge and was leading into the last straight when Balsamo overtook her, setting the stage for Kopecky to execute a flawlessly timed final push to victory.
Kopecky expressed her elation and relief at achieving her season’s primary goal, saying, “This was the goal of the season, to also do it is really nice. The team gave me so much confidence the whole season already, but especially the last week.” She acknowledged the high tension of competing against swift sprinters like Vos and Balsamo, adding, “It’s always nervous, you are here with two very fast sprinters, Vos and Balsamo, so you’re never sure.”
The focus shifts to the men’s competition on Sunday, with Mathieu van der Poel aiming to defend his title and secure a back-to-back victory following his recent triumph at last week’s Tour of Flanders.
