A man who was acquitted of involvement in the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has announced his candidacy for county sheriff.
Eric Molitor has filed papers to challenge Wexford County Sheriff Trent Taylor in the upcoming Republican primary in August, The Detroit News reported Thursday.
Molitor stated that he is running on a platform that includes a pledge not to enforce a new state law allowing the confiscation of guns from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others.
“It’s going behind someone’s back to take their possessions,” Molitor commented.
Molitor and two other men were acquitted of charges of supporting a terrorist act. They were accused of aiding the leaders of the kidnap plot by participating in military-style drills and visiting Whitmer’s vacation home in 2020.
“This was a setup by the government,” Molitor claimed, referring to the numerous informants and undercover FBI agents involved in the investigation.
Nine men were convicted either at trial or through guilty pleas, while five were acquitted.
Responding to Molitor’s candidacy, Taylor remarked, “Anybody can run for sheriff. There are no set qualifications.”
