Netflix Acquires Pablo Larraín’s Maria Starring Angelina Jolie as Opera Icon Maria Callas
Netflix has picked up Maria, directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Angelina Jolie as opera legend Maria Callas. The film will debut at the Venice Film Festival before streaming on Netflix.
Bollywood Fever: Netflix has secured the rights to Pablo Larraín’s Maria, a biographical drama starring Angelina Jolie as the legendary opera singer Maria Callas.
The acquisition comes just ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 29.
Following its premiere at the prestigious festival, Maria will be available to stream on Netflix, though the release date remains undisclosed.
In a statement on Wednesday, Larraín expressed his excitement about partnering with Netflix again, describing Maria as his most personal work to date.
The film is a “creative imagining and psychological portrait” of Maria Callas, exploring her journey as she seeks to find her own voice and identity after a lifetime of performing for the world.
Maria is based on true accounts and will delve into the tumultuous and tragic life of one of the world’s greatest opera singers, focusing on her final days in 1970s Paris.

The film promises to be a poignant exploration of Callas’ inner world, reimagined through Larraín’s unique lens.
The cast features a strong ensemble, including Pierfrancesco Favino (Adagio, The Hummingbird), Alba Rohrwacher (La Chimera, Hungry Hearts), Haluk Bilginer (Winter Sleep), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog, Elvis), and Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Caos Calmo).
The screenplay for Maria was written by Steven Knight, known for his work on Spencer, Peaky Blinders, and Eastern Promises.
The film is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula, Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film, and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment, a Fremantle company. FilmNation Entertainment will handle worldwide sales.
Maria is poised to captivate audiences with its exploration of one of the most iconic figures in opera history, brought to life by Jolie’s portrayal and Larraín’s direction.
