Netflix has joined forces with Kim Kardashian once again for a new project that resonates deeply with her personal experiences. The streaming giant has acquired the rights to develop “Calabasas,” a TV series set to be produced by Kardashian alongside Emma Roberts, her co-star from “American Horror Story.” The series will also involve I. Marlene King, the creator of “Pretty Little Liars,” who will write the adaptation and serve as the showrunner, and producer Alexandra Milchan.
“Calabasas” is inspired by Via Bleidner’s novel “If You Lived Here You’d Be Famous By Now,” which was published in 2021. The novel provides a genuine peek into the lives of those residing in the same Los Angeles suburb where the Kardashians grew up, a location prominently featured on their reality show, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” However, the narrative focuses on Bleidner’s own experiences rather than the famous family, recounting amusing and poignant stories of her adolescence in one of LA’s most prosperous areas.
The book describes Bleidner’s journey as she moves from a private Catholic school to the public Calabasas High, facing a stark cultural transition into a world filled with celebrities and luxury. She adopts a journalistic approach to blend in, documenting her observations and the lavish eccentricities of her new environment, such as a celebrity-endorsed lunch spot, a theater program that hires a renowned dog for a school play, and even a whimsical attempt by Kanye West to transform the school into a YEEZY institution.
This project marks a significant personal venture for Kardashian, who has previously appeared in “American Horror Story: Delicate” as the formidable publicist Siobhan Corbyn. Additionally, she is working on another Netflix project titled “Fifth Wheel” and has a thriller and a legal drama under development with Amazon and Hulu, respectively, involving Ryan Murphy, co-creator of “AHS.”
