Simon Harris Ascends to Fine Gael Leadership, Eyes Role as Ireland’s Youngest Prime Minister
Bollywoodfever, March, 24: Simon Harris has been named the new leader of the Fine Gael political party in Ireland, setting him on course to become the country’s youngest prime minister at the age of 37.
Serving as an Irish government minister, Harris was the sole candidate for the party’s leadership, succeeding Leo Varadkar who recently announced his resignation from both the leadership and prime ministerial roles.
In his address, Harris expressed deep honor in leading Fine Gael, acknowledging the trust placed in him by the party and its members. He committed to fulfilling this trust through diligent effort, stating, “With blood, sweat and tears – day in and day out – with responsibility, with humility and with civility.”
Harris is poised to deliberate on his cabinet selections after the Dáil resumes on April 9, with nominations for the leadership having closed on Sunday afternoon, leaving him unchallenged for the position.
As the minister for further and higher education, Harris was widely favored for the leadership role early on, securing support from key party figures even before the nomination process began. Notably, Ministers Helen McEntee, Paschal Donohoe, and Heather Humphreys were among those endorsing him.
Feeling “overwhelmed and honored” by the backing he received, Harris, upon confirmation of his leadership, reflected on the constant presence of challenges but emphasized the resilience and values that have historically guided the nation. He highlighted the importance of hope, enterprise, equality of opportunity, integrity, and security as core values.
To Harris, these principles are paramount. He voiced his belief in the transformative power of public service and politics to improve lives, underscoring his dedication to making a positive impact through his leadership.
