Powerball Draws $1.3 Billion Jackpot Numbers After Delay

News

After a significant delay, Powerball announces numbers for a $1.3 billion jackpot, tying the record for consecutive draws without a winner and ranking as the eighth largest in U.S. lottery history.

The Powerball lottery conducted its draw early Sunday morning, unveiling an estimated jackpot of $1.3 billion after a delay exceeding three hours. The numbers revealed were 22, 27, 44, 52, 69, with a red Powerball of 9.

This draw marks the 41st occurrence without a jackpot winner since the prize was last claimed on New Year’s Day, equaling the longest streak of consecutive draws without a winner, previously recorded in 2022 and 2021.

The jackpot’s growth to become the eighth largest in the annals of U.S. lottery history is attributed to the steep odds of 1 in 292.2 million, which significantly lowers the chances of winning. This allows the prize to accumulate over three draws each week for an extended period.

The $1.3 billion estimate is based on a single winner opting for an annuity payment, which includes an upfront sum followed by 29 annual disbursements. However, winners typically prefer a one-time cash option, which, for this draw, was estimated at $608.9 million.

The draw, which usually takes place at 10:59 p.m., was postponed until just before 2:30 a.m. ET on Sunday. The delay was due to one of the participating organizations needing additional time to fulfill necessary pre-draw procedures, as per Powerball’s statement.

Powerball elaborated, “Powerball game rules require that every single ticket sold nationwide be checked and verified against two different computer systems before the winning numbers are drawn. This ensures that each ticket has an equal opportunity to win. Tonight, one jurisdiction required extra time to complete this pre-draw process.”

Powerball enjoys wide participation across 45 states, in addition to Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
