The Pittsburgh Steelers face an unexpected quarterback controversy heading into their final preseason game, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields competing for the starting role after Wilson’s injury.
Bollywood Fever: The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in the midst of an unexpected quarterback controversy as they approach their final preseason game of the year.
With just one game left before the regular season, the team is grappling with a difficult decision at the quarterback position.
The situation arose after starting quarterback Russell Wilson injured his calf during conditioning tests, sidelining him temporarily and opening the door for backup quarterback Justin Fields to step up.
Fields seized the opportunity, taking all of the first-team reps in Wilson’s absence. During this time, he not only developed a rapport with his teammates but also began to assert himself as a potential leader of the offense.
When asked about his position in the quarterback competition, Fields confidently stated, “I think I’ve shown what I can do.”
However, his performance in practice will need to translate onto the field once more, as both Wilson and Fields are expected to play in the Steelers’ final preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.
The quarterback situation has become a focal point for the Steelers, particularly after last week’s disappointing 9-3 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Head coach Mike Tomlin expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of both quarterbacks following that game.
“I was really upfront with the group about it in that regard, quarterback play can’t be a problem for us,” Tomlin said. “We’ve got to be better than we were tonight in that area. You know, still not what we’re looking for. It was better in some areas but still JV in too many others.”
The final evaluation of the quarterbacks will take place this weekend, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EDT. As the Steelers look to solidify their roster heading into the regular season, all eyes will be on Wilson and Fields as they compete for the starting role.
