Super Bowl Champion Golden Richards Passes Away at 73

BollywoodFever, February 24:  Golden Richards, known for his pivotal role in a trick play that contributed to the Dallas Cowboys’ victory in Super Bowl XII, passed away at his residence in Murray, Utah, at the age of 73 due to congestive heart failure.

His nephew, Lance Richards, confirmed the sad news in a heartfelt Facebook post, recalling fond memories of bonding over hunting trips and Dallas Cowboys football. Lance described his uncle as a kind and gentle soul, expressing relief that Golden was no longer suffering.

A standout athlete, John “Golden” Richards excelled as a speedy wide receiver at Granite High School in Salt Lake City before continuing his athletic journey at Brigham Young University (BYU) and the University of Hawaii.

Drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 1973 NFL Draft, he spent over five seasons with the team before concluding his career with the Chicago Bears from 1978 to 1979.

Golden Richards’ most memorable moment came during Super Bowl XII in 1978, where he caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from running back Robert Newhouse on a trick play, securing a decisive victory over the Denver Broncos.

Despite this celebrated achievement, Richards humbly reflected on the camaraderie and spirit of every game as the true highlight of his career.

However, post-retirement, Richards faced challenges with addiction and health issues.

Overcoming alcoholism and a dependence on pain medication, he battled Parkinson’s disease since his diagnosis in 2011.

Additionally, a fall resulting in a broken hip on Christmas Day in 2022 further compounded his declining health.

Reflecting on his football career, Golden Richards left a lasting legacy, amassing 122 catches, 2,136 yards, and 17 touchdowns in 86 regular-season games, along with 501 yards as a punt returner.

Despite the toll of injuries and health struggles, his contributions to the sport and the cherished memories he created will forever be remembered by fans and loved ones alike.
