Relative of Suspected Killer Jose Ibarra Faces Charges for Possessing Counterfeit Green Card

BollywoodFever, February 24:   The brother of the suspect arrested in connection with the tragic killing of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley has been apprehended for possessing a counterfeit green card.

Diego Ibarra, aged 29, faced charges after a police stop related to the ongoing murder probe, as reported by the US Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia.

Currently, Diego is held in state custody, according to jail records.

His younger brother, 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra, remains detained on various charges, including malice murder, linked to Riley’s untimely demise.

Originating from Venezuela, both brothers have become central figures in the investigation.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) uncovered Diego Ibarra’s undocumented status during an encounter with an Athens-Clarke County police officer. The officer suspected him to match the description of the wanted suspect in Riley’s case.

Diego Ibarra presented a permanent resident card, known as a green card, which was later identified as fraudulent upon investigation.

Further scrutiny revealed that he had encountered the US Border Patrol in El Paso, Texas, on April 30, 2023. Despite being processed for immediate removal, Diego was released to New York City pending asylum due to his claim of reasonable fear of returning to Venezuela.

Subsequently, he faced multiple encounters with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, including arrests for driving under the influence, driving without a license, shoplifting in October, and failing to appear for a fingerprintable offense in December.

Diego Ibarra’s initial court appearance awaits scheduling, with potential consequences of up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

It remains unclear if authorities are considering additional charges related to Riley’s tragic death.

The Augusta University nursing student, aged 22, was discovered deceased from blunt force trauma near Lake Herrick on the University of Georgia campus. Her disappearance, initially reported by a friend after a morning run, sparked a widespread search effort.

UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark disclosed during a press conference that the suspect had no prior connection to Riley, characterizing the incident as a crime of opportunity.

Although Jose Ibarra is confirmed not to be a US citizen, details regarding his immigration status remain undisclosed.
