Vaughn had been signed to a multi-year contract extension by Brooklyn in February 2023. With his exit, the team plans to announce an interim coach soon.

General manager Sean Marks expressed the difficulty of the decision, emphasizing Vaughn’s character and contribution to the organization over the past eight years.

During his tenure, Vaughn, 49, achieved a record of 71-68 across parts of three seasons as Nets head coach, including a 7-3 stint as interim head coach during the 2019-20 season.

He took over from Steve Nash seven games into the 2022-23 campaign but did not oversee a full season.

Vaughn previously served as head coach of the Orlando Magic from 2012 to 2015, tallying a record of 58-158 during his tenure.
