End of an Era: Tropicana Las Vegas to Be Demolished for New Baseball Stadium
After 67 years of operation, the Tropicana Las Vegas, the Strip’s third-oldest casino, is set to close its doors and be demolished in October to make way for a $1.5 billion Major League Baseball stadium. This transition marks a new phase in Las Vegas’s evolution into a sports entertainment center.
Charlie Granado, a bartender at the Tropicana for nearly four decades, reflected on the casino’s closure with mixed emotions, acknowledging it as the end of an era but also a positive change for the city.
Opening its doors when Clark County’s population just surpassed 100,000, the Tropicana was initially built for $15 million and boasted 300 rooms. Known as the “Tiffany of the Strip” for its elegant design and lush gardens, the Tropicana was a magnet for A-list celebrities and legendary performances, hosting stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Jr. Its connection with the Rat Pack and a storied past under mob influence solidified its iconic status in Vegas history.
The Tropicana underwent several transformations to keep pace with Las Vegas’s growth and changing landscape. Additions included two hotel towers and a stained glass ceiling over the casino floor, while thematic rebrands attempted to keep the resort fresh and relevant.
Despite its ties to organized crime in its early days, the Tropicana eventually distanced itself from such associations, becoming known for hosting the long-running “Folies Bergere” show, a staple of Vegas entertainment that highlighted the city’s famous showgirls.
The impending demolition of the Tropicana and its replacement with a baseball stadium symbolize Las Vegas’s continual reinvention. While some mourn the loss of a classic Vegas landmark, others see it as a natural progression for a city always looking towards the future. As it stands, the Tropicana’s legacy will remain a significant chapter in the storied history of the Las Vegas Strip.
