Tulane Head Coach Jon Sumrall Talks Challenges of Facing Oklahoma Sooners’ Defense

In preparation for their upcoming game, first-year Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall spoke about what he expects to face from the Oklahoma Sooners, particularly their impressive defense led by Coach Brent Venables.

Sumrall emphasized the difficulty of playing in such a competitive environment but noted that his team is ready for the challenge.

When asked about what stands out regarding Oklahoma’s defense, Sumrall praised their coaching and talent.

“They’re well-coached. Brent does a great job with the defense. Their defensive staff is really good, and they’ve got really good players,” Sumrall said. “They keep you guessing and off balance with their scheme, and the players make it even tougher. So, we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

Sumrall also addressed Oklahoma’s remarkable ability to force turnovers, with the Sooners leading the nation with eight turnovers so far.

“They attack the ball and the ball carrier. They swarm and run with great energy to the football. They’ve got guys who can make plays,” he said. “They put you in binds with what they can do schematically, and their attacking style causes problems for offenses.”

As Tulane prepares for the game, Sumrall knows the matchup will be a significant test for his team against a top-tier defense.
