U.S. Soccer Federation denounces online racist abuse of players after 2-1 Copa America loss to Panama. Tim Weah apologizes for his red card incident amid backlash.
Bollywood Fever: The U.S. Soccer Federation strongly condemned the online racist abuse directed at their players following their 2-1 defeat by Panama at the Copa America on Thursday.
“There is absolutely no place in the game for such hateful and discriminatory behavior,” U.S. Soccer stated on X. “These actions are not only unacceptable but also contrary to the values of respect and inclusivity that we uphold as an organization.”
Tim Weah, who is Black, was among the players targeted by the abuse. The U.S. forward received a straight red card in the 18th minute for punching a Panama player in the back of the head during an off-the-ball incident.
Despite being a player down, the U.S. initially took the lead but were equalized four minutes later. Panama secured their win with a goal in the 83rd minute.
Weah expressed his regret over the incident, stating, “A moment of frustration led to an irreversible consequence, and for that, I am deeply sorry to my teammates, coaches, family, and our fans.”
