UK and EU Collaborate to Exchange Intelligence on Migrant Trafficking Gangs

London, BollywoodFever, February 23: Britain and the European Union are set to enhance their collaboration in combating human trafficking by exchanging intelligence on criminal networks.

The agreement, facilitated by the EU’s border protection agency, Frontex, signifies a step towards closer cooperation post-Brexit.

Under this arrangement, both parties will streamline the exchange of information, share tactics, provide training for officials, and explore innovative technologies to combat illegal migration, as outlined by the British government. A formal agreement is scheduled to be signed in London on Friday.

British Home Secretary James Cleverly emphasized the global nature of organized immigration crime and people smuggling, stressing the importance of shared solutions and ambitions.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has prioritized curbing the arrival of asylum seekers via small boats from France, aiming to address public concerns and potentially bolster support for the Conservative Party ahead of anticipated general elections.

While bilateral agreements, such as the recent collaboration with Albania to disrupt people-smuggling networks, have been pursued by Britain, the absence of returns agreements with the EU since 2020 has posed challenges.

Notably, the agreement with the EU does not entail financial contributions from Britain nor includes returns arrangements, as confirmed by a Home Office spokesperson.

This development follows previous efforts by Sunak’s government to mend relations with the EU, including rejoining the Horizon science research programme and reaching agreements on Northern Ireland’s trading arrangements.
