Whoopi Goldberg Discusses Choosing Career Over Parenthood on ‘The View’
Bollywoodfever, March 13: Whoopi Goldberg, an Academy Award-winning actress, openly shared on Tuesday’s episode of The View that she prioritized her acting career over her relationship with her only child, Alexandrea Martin.
Goldberg explained that she seized her career opportunities, knowing such chances were once in a lifetime, despite her daughter not always approving of her choices.
Discussing Lily Allen’s remarks about parenthood impacting her career, Goldberg shared, “My kid came before my career, and I chose my career because I knew this would never happen again.
She didn’t always like it, but that is the process of being a parent – they’re not supposed to like everything you do.” Goldberg reassured that she always included her daughter in her travels, emphasizing, “I never didn’t travel with my kid.”
Alexandrea was 11 when Goldberg made her significant film debut in Steven Spielberg’s “The Color Purple” as Celie Harris-Johnson, leading to a rapidly advancing acting career. Goldberg’s portrayal of Oda Mae Brown in “Ghost” won her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1991. She also starred in “Sister Act” and its sequel, along with voice roles in several prominent films, earning her the prestigious EGOT status.
Goldberg has been a fixture on The View since 2007, taking over from Rosie O’Donnell. The discussion expanded to include views from co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines on balancing career and family, with Hostin reflecting on her own choices and Haines discussing the challenges and adaptations required for women to have it all, albeit at different times.
Alyssa Farah Griffin, pondering future family plans, highlighted the necessity of prioritizing and accepting that not all life aspects can be perfectly balanced simultaneously, emphasizing the long-term fulfillment family brings.
