Zendaya discusses her private life with Tom Holland, her thoughts on fame, and her challenging role in ‘Challengers’ in a revealing interview with British Vogue.
Zendaya offered a glimpse into her relationship with Tom Holland in a recent interview with British Vogue for its May Issue, discussing more than just her beauty routines. The “Challengers” star, who appeared in a tennis-themed photo shoot for the magazine, praised Holland for gracefully navigating his swift ascent to fame.
The couple, who first met on the set of “Spiderman: Homecoming” in 2017, usually keeps their relationship private. Zendaya reflected on their journey, noting, “We were both very, very young, but my career was already kind of going, and his changed overnight. I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.“
Zendaya also shared her thoughts on fame and its impact on her personal life, particularly regarding the prospect of having children. She expressed concerns about her future kids having to cope with her public life, saying, “It’s a matter of sustainability, how she can continue to make this demanding business that she loves so dearly work for her. Because I don’t necessarily want my kids to have to deal with this [fame]… and what does my future look like? Am I going to be a public-facing person forever?“
On dealing with her own fame, Zendaya remarked, “You just kind of get used to the fact that, ‘Oh, I’m also one of these art pieces you’re going to take a picture of.’ I just gotta be totally cool with it and just live my life.” She emphasized the balance she’s found in being grateful for her career while also setting boundaries for her personal time and space.
Zendaya then discussed her role in the upcoming film “Challengers,” where she breaks away from her typical high school roles to play an adult mother, a transition she found both refreshing and intimidating. She stars as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach who navigates complex relationships with her husband and ex-boyfriend against the backdrop of competitive tennis. Zendaya shared her approach to portraying Tashi, a character she found intimidating and vastly different from her previous roles, aiming to push her boundaries as an actress.
Her co-stars, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, praised Zendaya for creating a supportive and collaborative environment on set. Faist highlighted the importance of their off-screen bond, saying, “We were able to spend time together during rehearsals and beyond, especially with Josh. We were able to get to know each other as people before we could get into the film. We created a real friendship that created the basis of the film.”
Zendaya also touched on the significance of having an intimacy coordinator on set for “Challengers,” ensuring a safe environment for the film’s intense erotic scenes. She appreciated the coordinator’s role in fostering comfort and safety during filming, emphasizing the importance of off-camera bonding with her co-stars to build genuine connections for their on-screen performances.
