EU Slams Elon Musk’s X for Deceptive Blue Checkmarks Under New Social Media Regulations
The European Union charges Elon Musk’s X with failing to meet transparency and accountability standards under the new Digital Services Act, criticizing the platform’s blue checkmarks.
London, Bollywood Fever: The European Union has accused Elon Musk‘s X, formerly known as Twitter, of being deceptive with its blue checkmarks and failing to meet the transparency and accountability standards set by the bloc’s new social media regulations. This marks the first formal charge against a tech company since the Digital Services Act (DSA) took effect.

On Friday, the European Commission released preliminary findings from its investigation into X under the DSA, a comprehensive rulebook requiring platforms to take more responsibility for protecting users and maintaining clean, transparent sites.
Regulators criticized X’s blue checkmarks, describing them as “dark patterns” that deviate from industry best practices and can potentially be used by malicious actors to deceive users. After Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, the platform began issuing verification marks to anyone willing to pay $8 per month. Previously, these badges were reserved for celebrities, politicians, and other influential accounts, mirroring common practices on other social media platforms.
The European Commission’s investigation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in social media, setting a precedent for future enforcement of the DSA.
