A 5-year-old boy in Santaquin, Utah, accidentally shot and killed himself after finding a handgun in his home. Authorities are investigating how he accessed the firearm.
Bollywood Fever: A tragic incident occurred in Santaquin, Utah, on Thursday when a 5-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with a handgun, according to local police.
Lt. Mike Wall of the Santaquin Police Department told KSL-TV that the boy discovered a 9 mm handgun in the back room of his house and fired a single shot.
Although the boy’s parents and siblings were present in the home, they were not in the same room when the shooting took place.
Family members attempted to resuscitate the child until emergency responders arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities do not suspect foul play, but investigators are working to determine how the boy was able to access the firearm.
No further details have been released, and a spokesperson for the Santaquin Police Department has not responded to additional inquiries from The Associated Press as of Thursday evening.
Santaquin is located approximately 60 miles south of Salt Lake City.
