Amy Adams Stars in ‘Nightbitch’: A Surreal Dive into Motherhood Set for December Release
Nightbitch,” featuring Amy Adams, is a satirical exploration of motherhood set to hit theaters on December 6, during awards season. Directed by Marielle Heller and based on Rachel Yoder’s novel, this Searchlight Pictures and Annapurna film transforms domestic life into a surreal journey, originally developed for Hulu but now slated for a cinematic debut.
The upcoming film “Nightbitch,” featuring Amy Adams in the lead role, is set for a theatrical release on December 6, aligning with the peak of the awards season buzz. Initially slated for a debut on Hulu, the film, a collaborative effort between Searchlight Pictures and Annapurna, will now grace cinema screens.

Directed by Marielle Heller, who transitioned from acting to directing with notable works like “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” and the Melissa McCarthy-led “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” under her belt, both produced by Searchlight, “Nightbitch” promises to be an engaging watch.
The film is based on Rachel Yoder’s 2001 novel, which offers a satirical look at motherhood and identity. It narrates the story of a woman engulfed in the exhausting and monotonous life of raising a toddler in suburbia, while her husband is away on business trips. Her reality begins to twist bizarrely as she suspects she might be turning into a dog, a premise that adds a surreal layer to the domestic narrative.
Marielle Heller, along with her regular collaborator Anne Carey, are producing the movie. They are joined by Sue Naegle, Christina Oh, and Stacy O’Neil, Amy Adams’ partner at Bond Group company. The project was originally developed by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures.
Heller expressed her deep connection to Yoder’s novel upon the film’s announcement in 2022, stating, “Rachel Yoder‘s book took my breath away. I haven’t felt this way about a book since I read ‘The Diary of a Teenage Girl’ many years ago. Rachel’s darkly hilarious tale of motherhood and rage made me feel seen. And adapting it with Amy Adams in mind has been the thing that has kept me going through the pandemic.”
Heller’s most recent directorial venture before “Nightbitch” was the 2019 drama “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” which highlighted Mister Rogers’ life and earned Tom Hanks an Oscar nomination for his role.
