Angry Twitter reacts to the Arrest of a Autistic girl, Who called Police Officer Lesbian
In the United Kingdom, law enforcement apprehended a teenage girl, whose mother indicated she had Autism. This happened after the girl made a comment about one of the officers resembling a lesbian. The incident, captured in a video, unfolded on Monday.
An officer from the West Yorkshire police informed the girl’s mother that she was being arrested. The mother responded, emphasizing that her daughter is autistic. However, one of the officers disregarded this information with a statement of indifference.
Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), can lead to misunderstandings when interacting with individuals who are neurotypical, as those with ASD may exhibit distinct learning methods, movements, and attention patterns. Challenges in social skills, speech, and nonverbal communication can also arise due to ASD, as highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In a distressing turn, the autistic girl began hitting herself in the head. The mother implored the police to maintain a physical distance, explaining that direct contact was exacerbating her child’s mental health crisis. The mother clarified that her child’s “nanna” is a lesbian and is in a marriage with another woman.
The mother, in an attempt to protect her teenage daughter, requested that the officers leave. She underlined that her daughter is not displaying any homophobic behavior and urged the officers to respect her daughter’s space.
In response, the mother directed a comment toward one of the officers, expressing concern about their behavior.
