AT&T Confirms Major Data Breach Affecting Millions of Current and Former Customers

BollywoodFever, March 30: AT&T has confirmed that an online data breach has compromised the information of over 7.6 million current and 65 million former customers.

In response, the telecommunications giant has reset the security passcodes for the accounts of all impacted active customers.

Over 70,000 Customers Affected by Network Outages on AT&T's Infrastructure

The breach potentially exposed a range of personal information, including names, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, dates of birth, AT&T account numbers, and passcodes.

The company has initiated contact with those affected through “email or letter,” providing details on the exposed data and outlining the measures being taken to support customers.

AT&T’s admission of the data breach, initially reported in 2021, followed a report by TechCrunch on the ease with which the encrypted passcodes, usually four-digit PINs, could be decrypted.

This security flaw was identified by a security researcher, emphasizing the vulnerability of these passcodes meant for account security during phone or in-store support interactions.

AT&T recommends that customers activate free fraud alerts with credit reporting agencies Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion as a precaution.

The leaked data, believed to be from 2019 or before, reportedly does not include personal financial details or call logs.

AT&T is collaborating with external cybersecurity professionals to thoroughly investigate the breach and has stated that, to date, there is no evidence suggesting unauthorized access to its systems.
