Australia PM Albanese proposes to partner on Valentine’s Day and She Said Yes
Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, took a break from his duties on Wednesday to mark Valentine’s Day in a special way – by proposing to his partner, Jodie Haydon.
Albanese shared the news of their engagement on Thursday through a heartfelt selfie of the happy couple, accompanied by the caption “She said yes” on social media. In the photo, Haydon proudly displays the engagement ring, a design she helped create alongside her fiancé.
Expressing his joy, Albanese stated in a Thursday interview with Sky, “It is such a joy to have found a partner whom I want to spend the rest of my life with.” The proposal took place on a balcony at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Canberra, following a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner at an Italian restaurant.
Haydon, who has a background in the pension fund industry, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support and well-wishes they’ve received. I just want to thank everybody for such warm congratulations today, from our friends to our family, from people that we don’t know,” she shared in the Sky interview.
The couple first crossed paths at an event in Melbourne in early 2020. Their engagement marks a historic moment as the first for a prime minister while in office, as reported by local media.
Even political rivals extended their congratulations. Opposition leader Peter Dutton, known for his fiery critiques, congratulated the couple in parliament and jokingly mentioned looking forward to “our version” of the royal wedding. Cabinet ministers also took to social media to offer their well-wishes, with Foreign Minister Penny Wong reflecting, “love is a beautiful thing” in a heartfelt post.
