Marla Adams, renowned for her iconic role on “The Young and the Restless,” has died at the age of 85. The celebrated actress, who won a Daytime Emmy for her portrayal of Dina Abbott Mergeron, passed away on Thursday in Los Angeles, her publicist Matt Kane confirmed.Â
The official Twitter account for “The Young and the Restless” expressed their condolences, stating, “We send our deepest sympathies to Marla Adams’ family. We’re so grateful and in awe of Marla’s incredible performance as Dina Abbott Mergeron as both Marla and Dina made an unforgettable mark on Y&R.”
Adams first appeared on the beloved soap opera in 1982 and was celebrated for her nearly four-decade-long portrayal of Dina Abbott Mergeron, including a poignant storyline about her character’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. “Of all the characters I’ve played, from The Secret Storm to Broadway, this has been the most astonishing, amazing part I have ever had the privilege to play,” she remarked in 2020.
The Alzheimer’s Association also paid tribute, highlighting her contribution to Alzheimer’s awareness both on and off the screen. “We are so grateful to Marla for raising Alzheimer’s awareness onscreen through her role on The Young and the Restless and offscreen as an #ENDALZ Celebrity Champion,” they tweeted.
Before her storied career on “The Young and the Restless,” Adams made her film debut in Elia Kazan’s “Splendor in the Grass” with Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty and starred as the memorable villainess Belle Clemens in “The Secret Storm.” “I was the b**ch of daytime,” she famously said about her role in the series.
Adams’ extensive television career also included roles on “Happy Days,” “Who’s the Boss,” “Matlock,” “The Golden Girls,” and more.
Her passing comes shortly after the loss of Meg Bennett, another alum of “The Young and the Restless,” who died on April 11 at the age of 75 following a battle with cancer.
