World number three, Carlos Alcaraz, may miss defending his Madrid Open title as he recuperates from a right arm injury. The injury has already forced him out of several key tournaments ahead of the French Open.

World number three Carlos Alcaraz is uncertain about defending his Madrid Open title later this month due to a right arm injury that has sidelined him from crucial warm-up events ahead of the French Open.

The 20-year-old, who successfully defended his Indian Wells title last month, reached the quarter-finals at the Miami Open but was injured during his first practice session at the Monte Carlo Masters. Consequently, the two-time Grand Slam champion was unable to compete in Monaco and had to withdraw from the Barcelona Open as well.

“My feeling isn’t right, but it is what it is. Now I’m fully focused on recovery and I have a little more time,” Alcaraz shared with reporters in Barcelona on Monday, following his decision to forego defending his title. “My goal is to try and go to the Madrid Open, but at the moment nothing is certain. I was given specific recovery times and I’ve respected them, but I haven’t felt good. I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I can’t say I’ll be 100% in Madrid, but that’s my intention. We’ll train and do everything we can so that the feelings improve so I can play a match… It’s also a very special tournament for me.”

Should Alcaraz not recover in time for the Madrid Masters, scheduled from April 24 to May 5, he could still participate in some clay court action before the French Open by entering the Rome tournament the following week.

The French Open’s main draw, where Alcaraz reached the semi-finals last year, begins on May 26.
