Dimitrov Surprises Alcaraz, Advances to Miami Open Semi-Finals
BollywoodFever, March 28: Carlos Alcaraz’s quest for the prestigious Sunshine Double was dramatically halted as Grigor Dimitrov, the 11th seed from Bulgaria, defeated the top-ranked Spaniard with scores of 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday, setting up a Miami Open semi-final clash against Alexander Zverev.
Dimitrov showcased superior service, winning 77% of his first-serve points, significantly outperforming Alcaraz’s 56%, and effectively saved four out of five break points he faced. He also managed to break Alcaraz’s serve four times throughout the 92-minute match.
The loss was a significant setback for Alcaraz, who, brimming with confidence from his recent Indian Wells victory just 11 days earlier, aimed to be the first man to secure the Sunshine Double since Roger Federer in 2017 but ended up falling short.
Dimitrov’s next challenge is against the German fourth seed, Zverev, who navigated through challenging conditions to secure a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan earlier in the day on the Stadium court.
Zverev, capitalizing on Marozsan’s serve, converted three of seven break-point opportunities, repelled two break points against him, and boasted an 80% first serve win rate, reaching the semi-finals without losing a set. Despite the windy conditions, Zverev acknowledged Marozsan’s impressive debut in Miami, highlighted by victories over top-10 players Holger Rune and Alex de Minaur, suggesting Marozsan’s potential rapid ascent in the rankings.
Zverev praised Marozsan’s performance, highlighting his resilience and skill that challenge even the top players’ ability to control the match. This victory marks Zverev’s notable return to the Miami Open semi-finals, his first since his runner-up finish in 2018, punctuated by a decisive backhand down the line to clinch the win.
