Charli D’Amelio, a 19-year-old dancer who rose to fame on TikTok in 2019, quickly ascended to become the platform’s most popular figure, although she has since been surpassed by Khaby Lame. Nonetheless, she remains a dominant presence on the platform, boasting over 152 million followers for her viral dance videos.
Over the years, D’Amelio has expanded her brand beyond TikTok, securing a major partnership with Dunkin’, launching her own show on Hulu, and featuring in a Garnier commercial. Given her deep ties to TikTok, her perspective on the app’s uncertain future in the US was highly anticipated.
Charli D’Amelio Criticized for “Turning Her Back” on TikTok
In March 2024, the US House of Representatives approved a bill to ban TikTok unless its parent company, Bytedance, sells it to a US-approved buyer. When questioned about the potential ban during an interview with Shopify’s D’Amelio Footwear Pop-Up, D’Amelio suggested that the end of TikTok wouldn’t be the end of the world, citing the precedent of Vine’s closure in the 2010s.
“Social media comes and goes,” she remarked. “There are always new apps, new people, and new trends. You can’t always be at the forefront of everything.”
These comments have drawn sharp criticism from some online users, who accuse D’Amelio of disregarding the platform that catapulted her to fame.
Critics on TikTok have been vocal, with comments such as, “Charlie pretending like she didn’t get famous from this app,” and “She actin’ like TikTok didn’t make her.” Some even suggest her response is due to being surpassed by Khaby Lame as the platform’s top creator.
Many who oppose the US TikTok ban feel that D’Amelio is distancing herself from the app that played a pivotal role in her rise to prominence.
As the bill to ban TikTok moves to the Senate for further consideration, the future of the app in the US remains in limbo.
