Debra Byrd Passed Away at 72
Bollywoodfever, March 6: Debra Byrd, renowned vocal coach to stars on shows like American Idol, The Voice, and others, passed away in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 5, at the age of 72. The cause and location of her death were not disclosed.
Byrd’s illustrious career saw her mentoring Grammy winners, recording artists, actors, musicians, and Broadway talents. Among those she guided were Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Bob Dylan, and Barry Manilow.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Byrd was a Kent State University alumna and honed her craft at the Karamu and Dobama Theaters. She gained fame performing worldwide with Barry Manilow as part of Ladyflash, Manilow’s featured backup group. Their collaboration produced the hit “Street Singin’” in 1976, which climbed to #27 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Barry Manilow expressed his grief, stating, “This is one of the saddest days of my life… She was one of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever had.”
Clay Aiken, reflecting on Byrd’s impact, remarked, “No one was a better mentor, coach, teacher, or champion to us Idol contestants than Byrd was… She was a light in so many lives.”
Byrd’s diverse career included working with Bob Dylan on tours and recordings, starring in the national tour of Broadway’s Bring In ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk, and contributing to film soundtracks like The Lion King and Sister Act II.
Serving as the vocal coach on American Idol from its inception through Season 10, Byrd later joined The Voice in a similar capacity. Her talents were showcased at the Oscars and the 2019 Super Bowl tribute to Prince, directed by Spike Lee.
Beyond her performance career, Byrd was a respected educator, chairing the vocal department at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles and serving as an artist in residence at Berklee College of Music.
