Eight-Year-Old Chess Prodigy Ashwath Kaushik Sets Record as Youngest to Defeat Grandmaster
A remarkable achievement was made on Sunday as eight-year-old Ashwath Kaushik became the youngest player ever to defeat a grandmaster in classical chess.
Competing at the Burgdorfer Stadthaus Open in Switzerland, Ashwath, who hails from India but resides in Singapore, secured victory over 37-year-old Jacek Stopa from Poland, breaking the previous record set just a month prior by Serbia’s Leonid Ivanovic.

Although both Ashwath and Ivanovic are eight years old, Ivanovic was born five months before Ashwath.
Reflecting on his historic win, Ashwath expressed his excitement and pride, particularly highlighting his ability to recover from a challenging position during the game.
Ashwath’s journey in chess began at the age of four, and he quickly rose to prominence, becoming the World Under-Eight Rapid Champion in 2022.
According to his father, Kaushik Sriram, Ashwath’s passion for chess developed naturally as he played with his grandparents.
Despite the absence of a sports tradition in their family, they wholeheartedly support Ashwath’s pursuit of excellence in chess, embracing each day as a new opportunity for growth and discovery.
Although Ashwath’s impressive run in the tournament concluded with a loss to International Master Harry Grieve, his achievement stands as a testament to his talent, dedication, and remarkable journey in the world of chess.
