Ex-NHL Enforcer Chris Simon Passed Away At 52

Chris Simon, a former NHL enforcer who was regarded as one of the most intimidating and formidable players on the ice, has passed away at the age of 52.

Throughout his 15-season career in the National Hockey League, Simon made his mark with teams such as the Colorado Avalanche, Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames, and New York Islanders. He was known for his role as a tough enforcer, engaging in over 100 fights and accumulating nearly 2,000 penalty minutes.

The NHL Alumni Association announced Simon’s passing on Tuesday, stating, “Chris was never afraid to stand up for his teammates, and played a key role in the dressing room. He was a beloved friend, father, brother, and son.”

Simon began his professional hockey journey in 1990 when he was drafted 25th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers. His career highlights include winning a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 1996.

Beyond the NHL, Simon also spent time playing in the Ontario Hockey League and the Kontinental Hockey League, concluding his professional career in 2013.

Simon was renowned for his fierce loyalty to his teammates on the ice, a trait that sometimes led to disciplinary actions. Throughout his NHL tenure, he was suspended eight times, missing a total of 65 games.

His death occurs shortly after the tragic news of Konstantin Koltsov’s passing, which is suspected to be a suicide.

Chris Simon was 52 years old.
