Located approximately 60 miles from Portland, the iconic 55,000 square foot hotel and ski resort became the focus of emergency efforts as fire crews were summoned following an alert by the hotel staff. Guests were quickly directed to safety as firefighters tackled the blaze under challenging windy conditions.

For two hours, the fire team worked diligently to extinguish the flames, successfully containing the fire to the roof and attic before it could cause more extensive damage. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. Although the ski area was closed on Friday, preservation efforts were promptly initiated to save and protect what were described as “historic assets,” including art and furniture affected by the firefighting efforts.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it is suspected that flying embers from a chimney may have been the culprit. Since its opening in 1937, Timberline Lodge has not only been a beloved landmark but also a piece of Hollywood history, with its exteriors famously captured in the opening scenes of “The Shining,” based on Stephen King’s novel.
