Streep’s return to Cannes after decades marks a significant moment, with her last appearance at the festival dating back to 1989 for her role in “Evil Angels a Cry in the Dark,” for which she won best actress.

Known for her privacy, Streep rarely attends film festivals. Cannes Film Festival’s chief, Thierry Fremaux, has been working to bring her back for several years. Alongside the gala ceremony celebrating her career, Streep may participate in a conversation during her time at Cannes. She follows Michael Douglas, who received the award at last year’s opening night.

The festival will begin with Quentin Dupieux’s “The Second Act,” starring Lea Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel, and Raphaël Quenard. The opening and closing ceremonies will be hosted by Camille Cottin, known for her roles in “Call My Agent!”, “Stillwater”, and “House of Gucci”. Greta Gerwig will preside over the jury of the festival, which will take place from May 14-25.
