IShowSpeed’s North Korea Attempt Interrupted by Military Troops During IRL Stream
IShowSpeed shared his experience of trying to enter North Korea during a recent IRL stream, revealing that military troops intervened.
IShowSpeed has garnered millions of subscribers on his YouTube channel thanks to his diverse content.
On May 14, 2024, the YouTube star took his fans to South Korea during an IRL stream but encountered trouble at the Unification Village, an area used by North and South Korean military for peace talks.
While visiting the area, Speed and his crew attempted to set up his IRL stream but were approached by military troops who confiscated the backpack he was using for the live stream.
“I went to go to North Korea, right?” he said. “I tried to bring my LiveU and stream and stuff. They took my LiveU, they took my stream.”
He explained that he attempted to stream through a phone but was being monitored and couldn’t proceed. Speed also displayed a picture of a military officer briefly restraining him.
Despite the difficulties at the North-South Korean border, IShowSpeed and his team continued the broadcast, showcasing various aspects of South Korean nightlife.
Tourists cannot randomly enter North Korea. In 2017, the US Government banned the use of passports to enter the country without special permission due to the increased risk of arrest and long-term detention.
Those allowed to enter North Korea must have a guided tour and are restricted to certain areas. Without special permission or a guided tour, Speed would not have been permitted to cross into the country.
According to CNN, the Korean Unification Village and Demilitarized Zone on the border of North and South Korea are closed to tourists without special permission, explaining why Speed was approached and had his equipment seized.
