J.D. Martinez accidentally hit Willson Contreras’ arm while swinging at a pitch on Tuesday, resulting in a broken arm for the catcher. The incident occurred during the Mets’ game against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Martinez attempted to connect with a Miles Mikolas slider but ended up striking Contreras’ forearm instead, causing an instant break, as seen in replays.
Contreras was in considerable pain and had to be attended to by trainers before being taken off the field and diagnosed with a fracture. He is expected to undergo surgery and will be sidelined for 6-to-8 weeks. Martinez, who was awarded first base due to catcher’s interference, expressed regret over the incident, stating that he had no intention of harming Contreras.
The injury is a significant loss for the Cardinals, as Contreras had been performing exceptionally well, batting .280 with six home runs this season. The game ended in a 7-5 loss for the Cardinals, adding to the unfortunate turn of events.
