McLaren’s Lando Norris will start 17th in the Azerbaijan GP after a yellow flag incident disrupted his qualifying run. Despite the setback, Norris remains optimistic about Sunday’s race.
BollywoodFever: McLaren’s Formula One star Lando Norris encountered a setback during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, failing to make it out of the first phase and landing in 17th place for Sunday’s race.
Norris, currently second in the championship standings, was forced to slow down during his final qualifying lap due to a yellow flag, preventing him from improving his position.
“Everyone did their second laps and I didn’t,” Norris explained to Sky Sports. “It was unlucky, that’s all. I had to lift.”
Despite the frustration, Norris remains hopeful about his chances in the race. “There’s a long race ahead, we have some good tyres in the bank, I’m still hopeful we can get a good result. I think the car is quick,” he added.
This marks Norris’ first early exit in qualifying since last November’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, where he started 16th and eventually retired from the race.
Although he holds second place in the overall championship standings, Norris trails leader Max Verstappen by 62 points.
The weekend leading up to the race has been filled with discussions about potential team orders at McLaren, with some speculating that Australian teammate Oscar Piastri, who made it to the second qualifying phase, might assist Norris in future races.
