Marvel Fires “X-Men ’97” Showrunner Beau DeMayo Following Misconduct Investigation
Marvel Studios terminated X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo after findings from an internal investigation, though DeMayo denies the allegations and claims a smear campaign.
Bollywood Fever: Marvel Studios has officially terminated X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo following an internal investigation into alleged misconduct.
The studio, which had kept quiet about the firing since DeMayo’s dismissal in March, finally issued a statement in August after DeMayo alleged that his credits for the show’s second season were stripped due to his posting of fan art for gay pride.
Marvel refuted this, claiming his termination stemmed from “egregious” findings in their investigation, which reportedly related to sexual misconduct, according to a source cited by Variety.
DeMayo, however, strongly denied the allegations in a statement released Wednesday, calling the claims “false” and “offensive.” He alleged that the accusations were part of a broader “smear campaign” to undermine his credibility, and he leveled numerous accusations of misconduct and discrimination against Marvel Studios and Disney executives, as well as specific crew members from X-Men ’97.
Among his claims, DeMayo alleged that his identity as a gay, Black man was used against him, and that he was portrayed with harmful stereotypes like being “intimidating” or “emotional.” He also detailed specific incidents where his creative direction for the show was met with resistance from Marvel executives, whom he accused of retaliation after he raised concerns about working conditions for VFX and animation artists.

DeMayo’s allegations further included claims of a toxic work environment, inappropriate jokes made about him by a producer, and Marvel’s reluctance to align with LGBTQ+ promotion, such as turning down his suggestion to collaborate with RuPaul’s Drag Race on promoting X-Men ’97.
Marvel has yet to respond to DeMayo’s accusations of mistreatment, but the situation has brought renewed attention to the behind-the-scenes culture at Marvel Studios, particularly regarding the treatment of marginalized creators and industry workers in animation and VFX.
