Philippines Confirms Two New Cases of Milder Mpox Clade 2 Variant
The Philippines reports two new cases of the milder mpox clade 2 variant, bringing the total active cases to three. Health officials confirm local transmission in Metro Manila.
Bollywood Fever: The Philippines has confirmed two additional cases of the mpox virus, specifically of the milder clade 2 variant, according to a statement from the country’s health ministry on Monday.
These new cases bring the total number of active mpox infections in the country to three.
Health Minister Teodoro Herbosa announced that local transmission of mpox clade 2 continues in the Philippines, particularly in Metro Manila.
The newly reported cases involve a 37-year-old male from Metro Manila, who developed a rash last week and was subsequently admitted to a government hospital, and a 32-year-old male from the capital who exhibited skin lesions.

Last week, the Philippines detected another case of the milder mpox variant in a 33-year-old male with no recent travel history outside the country.
These recent cases increase the total number of laboratory-confirmed mpox infections in the Philippines to 12 since July 2022.
Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years due to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that had spread to neighboring countries.
This new form of the virus has raised global concern because of its potential to spread through routine close contact.
Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, typically presents with flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions.
While usually mild, the disease can be fatal, particularly for children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems, including those with HIV, who are at higher risk of complications.
