Rhode Island Files Lawsuit Against 13 Companies Over Washington Bridge Structural Failures
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee announces a lawsuit against 13 companies for their role in the structural deficiencies of the Washington Bridge, which led to its partial closure and impending demolition.
Bollywood Fever: Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee announced on Friday that the state has filed a lawsuit against 13 companies involved in the design, construction, and inspection of the Washington Bridge, which was partially shut down in December due to safety concerns.
The bridge, a crucial link carrying Interstate 195 over the Seekonk River, will need to be demolished and replaced following an independent review that revealed additional structural deficiencies.
The lawsuit seeks to hold these companies accountable for their role in the bridge’s near-catastrophic closure and to recover the significant resources needed to rebuild the bridge and compensate the state.
The state argues that the companies failed to identify and address worsening structural issues in a timely and adequate manner, leading to the sudden and unexpected closure of the bridge.

State Attorney General Peter Neronha emphasized the economic impact of the closure, stating, “In the nearly nine months since the abrupt closure, our economy has borne an immense cost, and our state has and will continue to have to expend significant resources as a result.”
During the demolition and reconstruction of the new bridge, traffic will be rerouted, with six lanes — three in each direction — being diverted to the eastbound bridge structure.
The sudden closure of the westbound lanes in December caused severe traffic disruptions, turning a 40- to 45-minute drive into a several-hour ordeal, stranding commuters, and forcing some schools to switch to remote learning.
The Washington Bridge, which serves as a key gateway to Providence, carries nearly 100,000 vehicles daily, underscoring the significant impact of its closure on the region’s transportation network.
