Ryan Reynolds reveals that his friend and Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney’s cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine” was cut from the final film. Despite the disappointment, Reynolds praises McElhenney’s support and friendship.
Bollywood Fever: Of the many star-studded cameos in the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, one that didn’t make the final cut has left Ryan Reynolds feeling a bit somber.
The actor recently revealed that his friend and fellow Wrexham AFC co-owner, Rob McElhenney, had filmed a small role for the MCU crossover, but the scene ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor.
Taking to Threads on Friday, Ryan Reynolds shared the news with fans, expressing his disappointment. “So, @robmcelhenney kindly did a cameo in D&W,” Reynolds wrote. “The sequence wasn’t working and Rob is why it stayed in the cut for so long.
Even under a TVA mask, you can feel him smoldering with a raw, untapped reservoir of intensity. Don’t get me started on Wrexham. I wouldn’t know a love like that if it weren’t for Rob.”
Reynolds, known for his humor and heartfelt tributes, continued to praise McElhenney, highlighting the importance of having friends nearby during the filmmaking process.
“It feels good when friends are nearby. And even though I’m mortified he flew to London for me, I’m grateful my friend was on that set. Rob shows up for people. It’s why he’s the absolute best.”
In a humorous follow-up post, Reynolds described the fate of McElhenney’s character in the movie, albeit in jest. “Even as he begged for his life before Alioth snatched his unsuspecting body into the air, swallowing him whole, eventually digesting and converting him into Alioth-poo. RIP TVA Soldier,” Reynolds quipped, referencing the Time Variance Authority (TVA) from the film.
Reynolds and McElhenney are not only close friends but also co-stars on the FX reality series Welcome to Wrexham, which chronicles their adventures as they run the professional football club, Wrexham AFC. Their camaraderie on and off the screen has endeared them to fans around the world.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds and Hugh Jackman team up as the titular duo to assist the TVA in protecting the multiverse from the existential threat posed by Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin.
Despite McElhenney’s scene being cut, the movie still features a slew of high-profile cameos, including Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner, Chris Evans, Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, and Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively.
Since its release last month, Deadpool & Wolverine has shattered numerous box office records, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide.
Even without McElhenney’s cameo, the film has been a massive success, further cementing the partnership between Reynolds and Jackman as one of the most beloved in the MCU.
While fans may be disappointed not to see McElhenney on screen, Reynolds’ tribute to his friend serves as a reminder of the strong bond between the two, both in Hollywood and on the football field.
