Simone recently opened up about her experiences as an actress of Indian heritage. Rather than feeling pressure to represent her community, she celebrates it. She gained fame in 2022 for her role as the feisty aristocrat Kate Sharma in Bridgerton, a character whose Indian Tamil background was integrated into the storyline, marking a significant step for diversity in period dramas.

Appearing on the cover of the May issue of Vogue India, Simone discussed the importance of representing her community. When asked if she felt pressure to represent Indians, she responded, “Not really, because I’m an actor. I’m not travelling far and wide to India to save the country. But when you watch and read up on the history of India and what her people have gone through, it does feel heavy.”

Simone expressed joy in representing Indian women, saying it was the “best feeling” when fellow brown women shared how much it meant to see themselves represented onscreen. “Ninety-nine per cent of the people who recognize me and come up to me are women of color, and that’s the best feeling because they’re so excited for me,” she added.

Last month, Simone defended her Bridgerton co-star Nicola Coughlan against online body-shaming trolls. Speaking at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in Monaco, she praised Nicola for staying focused on her work and not letting the negativity affect her. “Yeah, the haters are going to hate, and I think we can all relate to that, but I really don’t think that she’s allowing that to bother her,” Simone said.

Simone expressed her belief in Nicola’s talent and future success, stating, “Nicola has a strong and fruitful career and entire life ahead of her. I really believe in her, as the world does as well. I think Nicola is just absolutely flying.”
