Veteran wrestler Tony Jones, known as “The Shooter” and seen in the wrestling documentary ‘Beyond the Mat,’ has died at age 53. A former amateur wrestler and graduate of San Francisco State University, Jones was a key figure in the acclaimed film documenting his WWF tryout

Tony Jones, the seasoned wrestler nicknamed “The Shooter,” recognized by fans from his appearance in the documentary ‘Beyond the Mat,’ has passed away. While the exact cause of his death on April 11, 2024, is yet to be revealed, his passing at the age of 53 has been confirmed by his local wrestling promotion.

Jones, the son of an African-American father, Anderson Jones, a member of the US military, and an Asian mother, Sadako Jones, was raised in the greater San Francisco area. A well-rounded athlete, he attended Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco, engaging in amateur wrestling, football, and track and field. He continued his wrestling career at San Francisco State University under coach Lars Jensen and earned a degree in broadcasting in 1995.

At 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, Jones pursued professional wrestling after college, training at Roland Alexander’s All Pro Wrestling school for a year before his ring debut in January 1997.

His journey in wrestling caught the attention of filmmaker Barry Blaustein, who was creating a documentary on the sport. Blaustein captured Jones and fellow wrestler Michael Modest during a WWF tryout match in September 1998, featuring their experiences in the acclaimed documentary ‘Beyond the Mat.’
