Bollywood Fever: Two armed drones targeted Iraq’s Ain al-Asad airbase, which hosts U.S. forces and other international troops, on Tuesday, according to two Iraqi military sources. This marks the second attack on U.S. forces in Iraq since early February, when Iranian-backed groups in the country halted their assaults.
In April, a U.S. official reported that two drones were shot down near the Ain al-Asad base. No casualties were reported in the latest attack, the sources confirmed. An Iraqi military official stated that defense systems downed one drone near the base perimeter. Additionally, Iraqi army patrols have increased their activities around the base to prevent further attacks.
The incident occurred less than a week before a high-level Iraqi military delegation is expected to visit Washington for discussions on ending the U.S.-led military coalition in Iraq. These talks began in January to reassess the drawdown of the coalition, which was formed in 2014 to combat the Islamic State after the extremist group seized large parts of the country.
A U.S. official, speaking anonymously, mentioned that a projectile appeared to target the base but did not result in any casualties.
