Two Teen Girls Arrested for Brutal Murder of 93-Year-Old Kansas Woman
Two 14-year-old girls have been arrested for the first-degree murder of 93-year-old Joanne Johnson, shocking the community of Augusta, Kansas.
Bollywood Fever: Two 14-year-old girls have been arrested in connection with the first-degree murder of Joanne Johnson, a 93-year-old woman brutally killed over Labor Day weekend last year in Augusta, Kansas. The shocking arrests, made on Thursday, have left the small town reeling as the community grapples with the horrific nature of the crime.
Joanne Johnson was found dead in her home on Robbins Street in September 2023. Investigators quickly ruled her death a homicide, determining that the elderly woman, who lived alone, was killed between the evening of Saturday, September 2, and Sunday, September 3. The brutal crime has since haunted her family and the close-knit community.
Authorities have not released the identities of the teenage suspects due to their age, but they did confirm that the girls are from the same town as the victim. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation announced that the teens are now being held at separate juvenile detention centers.
The arrests have brought a mix of emotions to the grieving family and residents of Augusta. Tim Johnson, Joanne’s son, expressed the profound shock and devastation that the family is experiencing. “How did something like this happen here?” he questioned. “This is a peaceful, tree-lined street that’s in a neighborhood in the middle of a 9,000-person town.”
Describing the situation as “inexplicable,” Tim likened the tragedy to “getting struck by lightning on a cloudless day.” He noted that the family is still struggling to process the reality of the situation, saying, “The family has no words, or ability to understand what has happened.”
The murder of Joanne Johnson, a well-loved member of the community, has left her family searching for answers. The crime, described as brutal and calculated, has been particularly hard for them to comprehend, especially given the young age of the alleged perpetrators.
Earlier this year, in a bid to bring those responsible to justice, the Johnson family and Kansas Governor Laura Kelly each offered $5,000, bringing the total reward to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The arrests of the two teenage girls, while shocking, have provided some relief to the heartbroken community that has lived in fear for the past year.
Holly Randol, a former neighbor of Joanne Johnson, expressed the sorrow felt by the community: “We just loved her, and this was the most devastating thing for our block, our neighborhood… Still heartbroken that this whole thing had to happen. It was kids, kids. My heart is just broken.”
Tim Johnson remembers his mother as a kind and compassionate person, deeply involved in the lives of those around her. “She was the type of person who was always interested in other people… She would talk to you for a couple minutes, and she’d know where you’re from, where you went to school, what you were doing and what you wanted to do,” he recalled. “The next time she’d talk to you she’d remember every one of those things… the type of person a lot of us aspire to be.”
As the investigation continues, formal charges against the two teens are pending. Despite their young age, the Johnson family hopes that justice will be served, reflecting the severity of the crime that took their beloved mother and grandmother.
