Ange Postecoglou Questions Tottenham's Mentality After Defeat to Manchester City

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou questions the club’s mentality following their defeat to Manchester City, ending their top-four Premier League hopes. Read more on his candid reflections and plans moving forward.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou expressed frustration with his team’s mentality following their defeat to Manchester City, which dashed their hopes of securing a top-four Premier League finish.

Before the match, the candid Australian dismissed any notion that Tottenham or their fans wouldn’t aim to take points from Manchester City to hinder their arch-rivals Arsenal’s title chances.

Tottenham held their own against City for much of the match, but Erling Haaland’s brace ultimately secured a victory for City. This win put City two points ahead of Arsenal with one game left each, ending Tottenham’s pursuit of a top-four spot.

Following a fifth loss in six games, Postecoglou was asked if the team’s performance provided confidence in the club’s foundation. He replied, “No, I think the last 48 hours has revealed to me that the foundations are fairly fragile mate. That’s just what I think. I just think the last 48 hours have revealed a fair bit to me. That’s alright. It just means I’ve got to go back to the drawing board with some things.”

When questioned about his frustration, possibly directed at fans celebrating City’s title edge over Arsenal, Postecoglou remained cryptic. “Outside (the club), inside, everywhere,” he said. “It’s been an interesting exercise. You can make your own assessments of what’s happened. I understand. I probably misread the situation as to what I think is important in your endeavour to become a winning team, but that’s ok. That’s why I’m here.”

Postecoglou previously stated his confusion over any Tottenham fans hoping for a loss to City, emphasizing his lack of interest in the bragging rights between the north London rivals.

During the game, Tottenham fans were subdued, with songs mocking Arsenal ringing out after City’s lead. Postecoglou commented, “I’m just not interested mate. Maybe I’m out of step, but I just don’t care, I just want to win. I want to be successful at this football club, it’s why I was brought in. So what other people, how they want to feel, and what their priorities are, are of zero interest to me.”

He also noted a lack of discipline in Tottenham’s football, a recurring issue throughout the season, but didn’t doubt his players’ attitude. “Unless I was watching a different game, we matched it with the best team in the land for the last four years, unless someone saw it differently,” he said.

Tottenham now need a point at Sheffield United on Sunday to secure fifth place and a Europa League spot.
