Britain’s Youngest Knife Murderers Sentenced to Life for Brutal Machete Attack on 19-Year-Old
Two 13-year-olds from Wolverhampton have been sentenced to life for the murder of 19-year-old Shawn Seesahai. The boys, convicted of the UK’s youngest knife murder since 1993, will serve a minimum of 8.5 years.
BollywoodFever: Two 13-year-old boys from Wolverhampton, Britain’s youngest convicted knife murderers, have been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of the brutal machete killing of 19-year-old Shawn Seesahai. Both were just 12 at the time of the November 2022 attack. The murder took place at Stowlawn playing fields in Wolverhampton, where Seesahai was fatally stabbed in the heart and suffered a skull fracture after a dispute about sitting on a park bench.
On Thursday, Nottingham Crown Court heard the case, where both defendants were handed life sentences with a minimum term of eight-and-a-half years. They are believed to be the youngest defendants convicted of murder in the UK since the 1993 case of Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, who were found guilty of killing two-year-old James Bulger.
The boys, who remain unnamed due to a court anonymity order, were described by the High Court judge, Mrs. Justice Tipples, as having committed a “horrific and shocking” murder. “You both killed Shawn in an attack that lasted less than a minute when he asked you to move from a bench. I am sure you intended to kill him,” the judge said.
During the sentencing, it was noted that both boys blamed each other for the deadly wounds inflicted on Seesahai, with one admitting to possessing the knife before the trial. The murder was characterized as a “spur-of-the-moment” attack, with the judge emphasizing the mitigating factors, including the young age of the defendants and their backgrounds. One of the boys had been exploited and groomed by criminals, while the other came from a supportive family with no prior history of violence.
Shawn Seesahai’s family provided a victim impact statement, describing the murder as senseless and tragic, adding that they are haunted by the fear Seesahai must have felt in his final moments.
West Midlands Police Chief Superintendent Kim Madill expressed the shock and sadness felt by the community, saying, “Shawn was only 19 when his life was taken at the hands of two boys, then aged just 12, who had armed themselves with a machete.”
The case highlights the devastating impact of knife crime, with prosecutors stressing the importance of awareness and the consequences of carrying such weapons. Jonathan Roe, a senior Crown prosecutor, remarked, “The defendants at the age of 12 should have been enjoying their childhood rather than arming themselves with a machete and killing an innocent person.”
