Caitlin Clark Might Decline Olympic Team Invitation: Factors That Could Influence Her Decision
BollywoodFever, March 28: Caitlin Clark, the spotlight’s current favorite, has an impressive list of achievements: she holds the record for most career points in NCAA history, is the leading candidate for the 2024 WNBA Draft, and was offered a staggering $5 million to join the BIG3 league. Moreover, she received an invitation to the Olympic team training camp. However, she will be unable to participate.
USA Basketball announced on March 28 the roster of 14 players invited to the camp, featuring nine Olympians, eight of whom are gold medalists from Tokyo 2020.
Among the invitees is Diana Taurasi, a five-time Olympic gold medalist (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020). The roster also includes Ariel Atkins (2020), Chelsea Gray (2020), Brittney Griner (2016, 2020), Jewell Loyd (2020), Breanna Stewart (2016, 2020), and A’ja Wilson (2020), all of whom have experienced Olympic success.
Additionally, Atkins, Gray, Loyd, Plum, Stewart, Wilson, Shakira Austin, and Sabrina Ionescu were part of the team that clinched gold at the 2022 World Cup, while Plum and Jackie Young participated in the Tokyo 2020 3×3 tournament.
Caitlin Clark’s Situation
The guard from Iowa Hawkeyes, Caitlin Clark, has been extended her inaugural invitation to an Olympic training camp. Clark, however, is well-versed in international play, having secured gold medals with junior teams, including a victory with the U19 squad.
Despite the fact that it has been 32 years since a rookie made the Olympic team, Clark’s potential inclusion wouldn’t come as a surprise, even considering her relatively limited experience at the senior level.
The challenge arises with the training camp’s scheduling from April 3-5 in Cleveland, Ohio. Clark and the Hawkeyes aim to be contenders in the NCAA Women’s Tournament Final Four, set for April 5-7 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, coinciding with the camp dates.
USA Basketball, cognizant of the Women’s March Madness calendar, has indicated that Clark’s participation in the camp hinges on the performance of Iowa in the tournament.
