“Days of Wine and Roses” Announces Closure, Joining the List of Broadway Shows Ending Before the Spring Season Surge
Bollywoodfever, March 6: The musical adaptation of the 1962 film “Days of Wine and Roses,” celebrated by critics, is set to conclude its Broadway run on Sunday, March 31, nearly two months following its debut on January 28.
This announcement marks it as the third production in recent weeks to declare its departure from Broadway as the industry prepares for an exceptionally busy spring season. “Spamalot,” which premiered last November, revealed its closure for Sunday, April 7, just a day prior, and “A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical,” which opened on December 4, 2022, is scheduled to end on Sunday, June 30.
These shows have faced box office challenges lately. Last week, “Days of Wine and Roses,” featuring a book by Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, earned only $364,686, with a 55% seat occupancy at Broadway’s Studio 54.
Having started its Broadway previews on January 6 and officially opening on January 28, the musical previously enjoyed an 84-performance, sold-out engagement at the Atlantic Theater Company Off Broadway.
By its closing date of March 31, it will have offered 25 previews and 73 regular performances on Broadway.
Producer Kevin McCollum expressed, “It’s been an immense privilege to bring this profoundly beautiful production to the stage.
While ‘Days of Wine and Roses’ concludes its Broadway stint, its legacy will endure through our cast recording, future stagings, and in the cherished memories of those who witnessed it both on Broadway and Off Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company this past summer. Excitingly, Broadway audiences have 31 more opportunities to witness Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James in this magnificent show.”
The production team includes Mark Cortale and Sing Out, Louise! Productions, with Michael Greif directing.
The cast features Kelli O’Hara, Brian d’Arcy James, Byron Jennings, Tabitha Lawing, David Jennings, Sharon Catherine Brown, Tony Carlin, Bill English, Olivia Hernandez, David Manis, Steven Booth, Nicole Ferguson, Addie Manthey, and Kelcey Watson.
